Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal
We follow the approved protocol for removing mercury amalgam fillings, established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine. In addition to a protective rubber dam, we use a hepa filter vacuum that draws the amalgam and toxic vapors away during the drilling and removal process. Additionally, we use mercury ionizers that act as magnets for any mercury that should escape into the room. Oxygen is brought into the room for added office purification and protection of staff and patients.
With the many new choices of dental materials available, we offer a variety of mercury- free options for fillings, crowns, and inlays. As older mercury amalgam fillings become worn out, we can replace them with less toxic materials that are bio-compatible with the patient. These materials can also be matched to the teeth in color, looking much more natural.
Ozone is a safe and effective way to decrease the harmful bacteria in our mouths. Ozone is produced using medical grade oxygen and equipment, allowing our office to offer a technology that is fast, painless and environmentally friendly. We have combined ozone with conventional dental care to benefit our patients.
How does oxygen/ozone therapy work?
Oxygen/ozone, when introduced into the living system, creates a "transient oxidative burst" by introducing high levels of oxygen. The infective microorganisms have no natural defense against this reaction; therefore, they are overstressed and die, leaving the healthy cells to flourish. Oxygen/ozone can enhance the outcome of all aspects of dentistry by killing disease-causing microbes. For example, periodontal disease is a chronic gum and bone infection. By utilizing the different application forms of oxygen/ozone such as ozonated water, ozonated oils, and placing oxygen/ozone directly into the infected gum pockets, periodontal disease can be arrested without the use of pharmaceutical drugs and the associated side effects. After removing the decayed portion of the tooth, we apply ozone to the prepared tooth to safely and effectively kill the decay-causing microbes and create a thoroughly disinfected tooth upon which to place the final restoration.
Great results have been seen using these techniques, including reduced sensitivity after dental work and improvements in periodontal health. Also, it is impossible to be allergic to oxygen/ozone. Ozone is just an energized form of oxygen, which is naturally formed by the sun and lightning in storms. Ozonated water is just hyper-oxygenated water, two primary nutrients of life! The scientific literature is vast in support of the effectiveness and safety of oxygen/ozone therapy. For more information regarding oxygen/ozone click here.
Oral Cancer Exams Using Velscope
It is estimated that of the 36,000 Americans annually diagnosed with oral cancer, only slightly more than half will be alive in five years. Because of the proximity of the oral cavity to the lymph nodes of the neck, oral cancer can spread quickly to other parts of the body. Finding oral cancer in its early stage is key to survival.
Dr. Webb has incorporated the use of the Velscope fluorescent light in her yearly exam. She feels strongly that you should have the most advanced standard of care available in the early detection of oral abnormalities, which include cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions. This new technology, which uses no rinses or dyes, causes no discomfort, takes only two minutes, and identifies changes in the soft tissue of the oral cavity. Velscope is a hand held device that uses a non-invasive blue fluorescent light to detect oral diseases by exciting molecules deep in the tissue, creating a contrast between normal and abnormal tissues. It is an invaluable tool for the detection of oral cancer.
Digital X-rays offer many advantages over traditional X-rays. The main benefit is that patients' exposure to radiation is greatly reduced. Another benefit is time saved. Since the digital images are visible immediately, there is no waiting. The elimination of chemical processing also keeps the dental office environment cleaner and more eco-friendly.
